Planted in 1870 to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, a magnificent Douglas Fir, has been confirmed as Wales' tallest tree at 62.5m (205ft) - taller than a 20-storey building. It is located along the north bank of fairytale Lake Vyrnwy, one of Britain’s most beautiful and undiscovered waterways.

European Funding has enabled a pathway to be built from The Old Village Car Park at The Lake to the tree for ease of access and convenience. There have been many improvements to the surround of Lake Vyrnwy of late which enable visitors on walking holidays and other sightseeing trips to see much more from the road which circumnavigates the the Lake for some 12 miles.

The Lake Vyrnwy tree was measured by tree surgeon Simon Cope, who stretched a length of rope up to the top as he climbed its branches. The height was then calculated back on the ground and confirmed by the Tree Register of the British Isles. Lake Vywnwy was the largest man-made lake in Europe until Kielder Reservoir was built in the mid 1970s.

Vyrnwy has a wonderful dam and beautiful straining tower. There are shops and activities available and a visit makes a wonderful day out. The RSPB Reserve has created miles of pathways and bridleways through forest and into the remote hills above the Lake. Creative puzzle trails and the Sculpture Park below the dam ensure everyone can be kept busy. You can find out more at www.vyrnwy.co.uk.

Also, Vyrnwy is at the foot of Bwlch y Groes, which is the highest public road mountain pass in Wales. It lies on the minor road linking Dinas Mawddwy and Llanuwchllyn. It is also known as the Hellfire Pass and was used between and after the wars especially by the Austin and Standard Triumph Motor Company's to test prototype cars. From the pass the spectacular view encompasses the plain of the Dovey Valley, Cadair Idris and a close view of Aran Fawddwy. The Snowdonia mountain range is clearly visible and this remote summit must have one of the best unspoilt views in the UK.
