keyboard skills

keyboard classes for schools

Keyboards are one of the most useful instruments connected with modern pop and music production, and yet very few school pupils have a good grasp of the basics. UTTA can provide a short course for whole classes aimed at refining their ability to use correct fingering and developing useful ideas which will help them use the keyboard creatively. The course involves a sizeable proportion of original sound creation alongside exercises designed to position the hand effectively and to increase student understanding of notes, layout and how to move through harmony progressions. Current pop tracks are referenced throughout the course. The course will culminate with many students having created their own performable music, and with a marked improvement in students ability to use the keyboard for the curriculum.

Sessions are assessed and student receive a brief report of their performance, focus and development. UTTA can provide a ten or five week course for a class in keyboard skills. Using the school's own keyboards system, our teachers work at a fixed rate per day.
This course usually costs between £100 and £130 for a full day working with the school's own facilities, and so timetabling so that we can see as many classes as possible during this time is important. We are of course able to work to other arrangements providing it's cost effective. Teachers carry current DB and relevant professional insurance. The teacher attending is a Grade VII pianist - but more importantly a commercial music producer and programmer.

Build a Band

  build a band for schools

Build a band is when we work in the school with numbers of students, helping them to create a group sound. These can include lead, rhythm and bass guitars, keyboards and pianos, drums of course as well as singers and backing singers, but also all manner of other instruments - violins, clarinet, sax, you name it, we are confident we can create a band from almost any line-up! One teacher can usually work effectively with up to ten secondary students or up to six primary students. Several bands can be created simultaneously with the right staffing levels, and in such situations we are happy to work with teachers to provide the right balance. Alternatively we can supply additional assistants from UTTA.

The session usually takes place at schools, however if it should take place at the studio, there's also the possibility of recording the end product. Students can be musicians or very basic learners, although some differentiation is a good idea, and total beginners are probably not suited to the session. Sessions are assessed and the teacher/organiser will provide a brief report for each participating student commenting on their cooperative and musical abilities as well as their other organisational skills. The Build a Band Session can be a standalone day where we focus with one group, or a series of days where we spend 90 mins with each of several groups. For this we generally charge £200 plus mileage per day of work for one organiser/teacher, adding £100 for every organiser. As always, timetables are important here and so we are prepared to negotiate over hours and times. Teachers and Instructors carry current DB and relevant professional insurance. All teachers have music industry experience and training experience. The majority also have teaching experience at primary and/ or secondary levels. Because of this, the Build a Band session provided by UTTA brings a level of aspirational confidence which we find works very well with students and performances tend to be ambitious and highly creative, producing some unique results even from students with very basic skills.

songwriter days /music production days

songwriter days and music production days for schools

Songwriter Days/ Music Production Days are an offshoot of the Beehouse Recording Studio Songwriter Experience Workshop or the Music Production Course .

Suitable for up to 8 keen songwriters, producers or composers, we can work with individuals and groups writing music on keyboards, with guitar or using music production software to bring their various compositions and songs to a highly evolved level. The exact types of project will depend on the facilities available at the hosting schools. We are particularly happy to work with singer songwriters in simple formats - guitar and voice for example, and also with Cubase, which is the main commercial software we are trained in. We can also work with Sibelius if required, and other types of software, please enquire. Projects may include songs, video soundtrack, dance music

The day culminates in an extended session where each creative plays their "work in progress" or completed work to the group.

The session usually takes place at schools, however if it should take place at the studio and with fewer numbers, there's also the possibility of recording the end product. Participants should really be students who are keen on creative work and have alreauy shown an interest or taken steps in this direction.

Sessions are assessed and the teacher/organiser will provide a brief report for each participating student commenting on their musical abilities and other associated skills.
